Join SheJumps and Alpenglow Expeditions for a Women’s Intro to Backcountry (Women’s Backcountry 1.0+) skiing and riding clinic at Palisades, CA!

Designed and led by Alpenglow’s female staff of AMGA-trained ski and splitboard guides, this two-day course combines Backcountry 1.0 with a full day of guided touring to create an immersive, all-women learning experience. You’ll gain the tools, techniques, and decision-making skills needed to start touring safely and efficiently, working with the same guide both days to build confidence and reinforce learning.

This course is perfect for women skiers and riders who love spending time in the mountains and are ready to take their first steps into backcountry touring. No prior backcountry experience is required.

You’ll be introduced to the tools, techniques, and decision-making skills needed to start touring safely and efficiently. Women’s Backcountry 1.0+ goes deeper than Alpenglow’s traditional Backcountry 1.0 by providing two consecutive days of guided instruction, allowing participants to build on their learning and apply new skills immediately.

Note: This is an on-snow course conducted in partnership with the Tahoe National Forest and Palisades Tahoe. Participants should dress for variable winter conditions.

• Familiarity with backcountry skiing and riding equipment
• Transitioning between walk and ride/ski mode
• Techniques for efficient uphill travel
• Using avalanche safety gear (beacon, shovel, probe)
• Packing and managing gear in cold environments
• Layering and equipment management
• Terrain awareness and communication techniques
• Touring day to put skills into practice

Advanced intermediate skiers and riders who are comfortable on and off-piste in varied conditions. Participants should be confident on all blue runs and most black diamond terrain at a resort (including ungroomed terrain). Ages 16+ welcome; ages 12–16 may join with a parent.

Expect two full days outside in winter mountain conditions, hiking and skiing. The group will pace itself, but both days are active and immersive. The experience, enthusiasm, and positive attitude each participant brings will enhance the weekend for everyone.

Touring skis/splitboards, boots, avalanche safety kits (beacon, shovel, probe), and packs are available for rent from Alpenglow Expeditions.
